1,1',1'',1'''-(1,2-Ethenediylidene)tetrakisbenzene (ETB) is a fluorescence probe used in transfection experiments. It has been shown to have good stability and high optical sensitivity. ETB can be excited at 350 nm and emits at 550 nm upon excitation. The hydrophobic effect of ETB is due to the presence of a hydroxyl group on the benzene ring that interacts with the fluorophore's electron cloud. The hydrogen bonding interactions between ETB molecules are what give it its strong fluorescence emission. Reaction solutions containing sodium salts are necessary for ETB to emit fluorescence because this reaction releases energy that can activate the molecule and cause it to emit light.
