N-[(1S)-2-[[(1S)-3-Fluoro-1-methyl-2-oxopropyl] amino]-2-oxo-1-(phenylmethyl)ethyl]carbamic acid phenylmethyl ester (MTX) is a proteolytic chemical inhibitor that has been shown to inhibit viral life. MTX prevents the formation of new virus particles by inhibiting the synthesis of viral proteins. It also induces apoptosis and autophagy in HL60 cells, leading to cell death. The mechanism of action of MTX is not clear but it has been shown to activate toll like receptor 2 (TLR2) and TLR4, which are receptors on cells that recognize microbial infection or neuronal death. This drug also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential, causing neuronal death. MTX may have an antiviral effect against HIV and other viruses by inhibiting their protease activity and thus slowing down their replication cycle.
