Furfuryl methyl sulphide is a chemical compound that is used in wastewater treatment, as well as in the production of furfuryl acetate. Furfuryl methyl sulphide has a pH of 4-5 and it is catalysed by strong acids, such as sulfuric acid. The way in which the reaction takes place can be modeled with diammonium salt and a non-polar solvent. Furfuryl methyl sulphide reacts with water to form hydrogen sulfide and ethanol. The reaction time depends on the concentration of furfural and temperature, but can take up to 24 hours at room temperature. Furfuryl methyl sulphide is used for analytical purposes because it can be detected by gas chromatography or liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. Furfuryl methyl sulphide has surfactant properties and the mercapto group makes it polar enough to dissolve in water.
