4-Hydroxy-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine is an ionic liquid that can be used as a solvent. It is made from biphenyl and pyridine, which are both organic compounds. 4-Hydroxy-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine has a dipolar nature due to the presence of a pyridine ring in its structure. Crystallographic studies have shown that it has a hydrodechlorination reaction with phenyl rings on the surface of catalytic sites. This reaction is regioselective and can be visualized using surface analysis techniques such as XPS and ESCA. 4-Hydroxy-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoropyridine binds to the pyridine ring of the phenyl group by ionic interactions or hydrogen bonding. The dihedral angle between the two groups is around 60 degrees.
