P-hydroxyhippuryl-His-Leu-OH is a natriuretic that has been shown to have beneficial effects on diabetic patients. It can be used to prevent and treat proliferative diabetic retinopathy, which is a complication of diabetes. P-hydroxyhippuryl-His-Leu-OH increases the glomerular filtration rate and decreases the ventricular mass index, which may be due to its ability to inhibit angiotensin II receptors in the brain. P-hydroxyhippuryl-His-Leu-OH also inhibits angiotensin converting enzyme, an enzyme that converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II. This inhibition leads to an increase in levels of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), and the downstream effectors of these peptides, namely nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase
