5-(2-Hydroxyethyl)pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione (5-EHP) is a synthetic compound that has been shown to have antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Streptococcus faecalis. 5-EHP inhibits the growth of bacteria by blocking the synthesis of uracil, which is required for DNA replication. 5-EHP is synthesized from 2-aminoethanol and pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione in a chemical reaction with sodium borohydride and potassium t-butoxide. The yield of this product is low because it reacts poorly with borohydride and requires high concentrations of potassium t-butoxide.
