R-(3)-Hydroxy myristic acid methyl ester is an organic compound that can be synthesized from benzyl alcohol and myristic acid. It has been shown to catalyze the oxidation of short-chain olefins. The reaction yields are not as high as those seen with other metal-containing catalysts, but this compound has the advantage of being a nonmetal catalyst that does not produce any pollutants. R-(3)-Hydroxy myristic acid methyl ester is also used in medicine, specifically for the treatment of obesity by inhibiting lipase. This drug may be useful in environmental pollution as it has been found to reduce the levels of benzene in polluted water samples.
