Description

2-Hydroxy promazine is a structural analog of promazine (2-chloropromazine), which has been used as an antipsychotic drug. 2-Hydoxy promazine is the active metabolite of promazine. It has been shown to have similar effects to promazine, but with less sedation and more locomotor activity in mice. This drug is also able to bind to albumin, which may explain its longer half-life in vivo. The reaction products formed when 2-hydroxy promazine was incubated with chlorine and hydrogen chloride were identified by mass spectroscopy and found to be chlorpromazine hydrochloride and 2-hydroxypromazine hydrochloride. These compounds are potentiated by fatty acids and lipid hydroperoxides.
