5-Hydroxy-1-tetralone is a compound that functions as an agonist of the 5-HT receptor. It has been shown to inhibit neuronal death in rats with an injury to the hippocampus, but it does not inhibit glutamate excitotoxicity. 5-Hydroxy-1-tetralone binds to adenosine receptors and has been shown to have antihistamine effects in mice. This drug also inhibits the activity of the enzyme human aldose reductase, which may be related to its ability to lower blood sugar levels. In addition, this drug has been shown to cause urinary retention and increased urination frequency in rats. These effects are likely due to the antagonistic properties of 5-hydroxy-1 tetralone on muscarinic cholinergic receptors.
