(2S,4S)-4-Hydroxy-L-glutamic acid is a synthetic molecule that has been shown to have neuroprotective properties. It blocks glutamate uptake and has an agonist binding site. (2S,4S)-4-Hydroxy-L-glutamic acid is synthesized by the addition of hydroxyl groups to the carboxylic acid group in L-glutamic acid. The functional groups in this compound are glutamic and acidic. This molecule is also an acidic substance and contains a molecule of glutamate. (2S,4S)-4-Hydroxy-L-glutamic acid is a reuptake inhibitor for glutamate. This compound can be used as a blocker for neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's disease or Parkinson's disease.
