It binds to peptides and has receptor binding activity. 4-Hydroxymethylated polystyrene can be used as a diagnostic tool for the detection of different types of peptide hormones, such as progesterone, testosterone, and insulin. This chemical also binds to fatty acids and metabolic disorders. 4-Hydroxymethylated polystyrene has been shown to inhibit the NS3 protease from the virus HCV, which is important for its replication cycle. The biological studies on 4-hydroxymethylated polystyrene have shown that it may have IGF-I like activities.
