2-Isopropyl-5-nitrophenol is an organic compound that is used as a reagent in the synthesis of glycols. It has been shown to be an analog of thymol, which is used in the manufacture of flavorings and perfumes. 2-Isopropyl-5-nitrophenol can be synthesized by reacting potassium hydroxide with glycol. The reaction product is then hydrolyzed to produce 2-isopropyl-5-nitrophenol and potassium hydroxide. This process can also be done using ethylene glycol as the substrate. When heated, 2-isopropyl-5-nitrophenol decomposes into hydroxylamine and nitric oxide gas.
