2-Methyl-1H-benzimidazole-6-carboxylic acid (2MBC) is a chemical inhibitor that prevents the synthesis of fatty acids in cancer cells. It has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of epimastigotes, which is an indication of its anti-cancer properties. 2MBC also inhibits the growth of human lung cells, although it does not affect cell viability. The mechanism by which 2MBC induces cell death is not yet known. However, this drug has been shown to bind to single stranded DNA and metal ions such as copper and zinc. This binding inhibits the formation of lipid droplets and prevents cellular division.
