Methylenecyclobutane (MCB) is a chloride yielding oxidant that can be used for the oxidation of hydrocarbons. It is a good catalyst for the oxidation of bronchial and hydroxyl groups. MCB has been shown to have a high rate of reaction with phenoxy, which is an alkyl radical. The reaction mechanism of MCB includes the formation of an intermediate electron-deficient radical, followed by hydrogen atom abstraction from the substrate. The product of this reaction is an alkene radical and a chlorocarbon radical. MCB also has antimicrobial properties, which may be due to its cationic polymerization ability with microbial cells and its ability to act as an inhibitor for growth factors in cell culture.
