5-Methyl-3-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole is a chemical that has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth. It binds to the mitochondrial electron transport chain and inhibits electron transport, leading to hypertrophy and cell death. 5-Methyl-3-phenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole has been shown to be bactericidal in vitro. This drug has been shown to inhibit the cellular production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bronchial cells. Furthermore, it has also been demonstrated that this drug can control levels of ROS by inhibiting the activity of NADPH oxidase. The effects of 5-methyl-3-phenyl-1,2,4 oxadiazole on animals have not yet been determined.
