3-Methylfuran is a chemical that is used as an insecticide. It is a solid at room temperature and has a molecular weight of 162.24 g/mol. 3-Methylfuran can be found in the form of crystals or powder, which can be dissolved in acetone, alcohol, or chloroform. 3-Methylfuran has been shown to have toxic effects on the liver and proximal tubules in rats when given orally at high doses. The toxic effects were due to oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. 3-Methylfuran also reacts with fatty acids to produce methyl ketones, which are thought to be responsible for some of its toxicity.
