Description:

1-Methylcarbazole is a functional group that has been shown to be an important intermediate in the synthesis of chromatographic science. In particular, 1-methylcarbazole has been used as a marker for the separation of isomers and as an additive to chemical ionization (CI) mass spectra. It is typically used with nitrogen atoms and reaction monitoring. 1-Methylcarbazole also has been found to be a useful marker for bacterial strains, such as E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, by using nmr spectra. Additionally, 1-methylcarbazole can be used for sample preparation in chromatographic science.
1-Methylcarbazole can be synthesized from β-unsaturated ketones via a nucleophilic addition reaction with methyl bromide.
