N-Methyl-DL-leucine hydrochloride is a peptide that has been shown to have antimicrobial properties. It also binds to the receptor site and blocks the binding of a virus, inhibiting viral life. N-Methyl-DL-leucine hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria by preventing bacterial esterase activity. This inhibition leads to the accumulation of esters, which are toxic to bacteria. N-Methyl-DL-leucine hydrochloride is an intramolecular hydrogen bonder and is prepared through hplc. It's a cyclic peptide with a hydroxyl group on its side chain at position 2, making it an alpha amino acid. Hydrolysis of this molecule occurs in acidic conditions with hydrochloric acid, yielding methyl D-leucine and hydrogen chloride gas.
