N-Methyl-L-Alanine methyl ester hydrochloride (NMA) is a valine amide that has been shown to have antiproliferative effects on human tumour cells. It is also an inhibitor of the enzyme polyamine oxidase, which converts putrescine to spermidine and spermine. NMA has been shown to be tolerated by mice in doses up to 200 mg/kg and does not show any signs of toxicity. NMA has also been shown to inhibit the growth of staphylococcus aureus, although it does not affect bacterial growth in general. NMA can be used as an alternative for antibiotics when bacteria are resistant to them.
