Product Information
2-(4-Methylphenoxy)benzoic acid is a xanthone that is used as an intermediate in the production of dibenzofurans. It can be synthesized by reacting 4-methylphenol and benzoic acid in the presence of a base. The xanthone reacts with the phenolic hydrogen to form an intramolecular hydrogen bond, which then transfers to a nitrogen atom on the adjacent molecule. This reaction breaks the C=C bond and forms an aromatic transition state that can be stabilized by electron delocalization. In addition, 2-(4-methylphenoxy)benzoic acid has potent anti-inflammatory properties as it inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX), lipoxygenase (LOX), and 5-lipoxygenase (5LOX).
