Mastoparan X is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that has been shown to be active against bacteria, fungi and viruses. It binds to the amyloid protein, which is involved in the formation of amyloid plaques in Alzheimer's disease, and exhibits fluorescence properties. Mastoparan X also binds to calmodulin and inhibits its activity, which may be involved in the regulation of a number of cellular processes. Mastoparan X has been shown to have hemolytic activity against both erythrocytes and leukocytes. This effect may be due to an interaction with cell membranes that leads to structural changes or alterations in acid-base equilibrium. Mastoparan X also exhibits strong antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It also exhibits anti-malignant activities, inhibiting growth of malignant brain cells.
