5-Nitro-1H-benzoimidazole-2-carboxylic acid ethylester is a nitroso compound that is used as an intermediate for the production of other drugs. It undergoes a sequence of reactions to produce an amino group, followed by hydrolysis to form the acyl group. The nitro group on 5-nitro-1H-benzoimidazole-2-carboxylic acid ethylester is activated by cyclization and then deactivated by hydrolysis. This process can also be reversed to produce the original nitroso compound. 5-Nitro-1H-benzoimidazole-2-carboxylic acid ethylester can also be converted into a naphthoquinone derivative with the addition of methylsulphonyl chloride and sodium hydroxide.
