5-Nitro-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-one is a nitro compound that is used in the synthesis of chemicals such as butyronitrile and amide. 5-Nitro-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-one can be synthesized by reacting an imine with a hydroxyl group and acid catalyst. The reaction proceeds via an electrophilic addition of the nitro group to the C=O group of the imine. This compound is also used to prepare polymers for use in plastics, rubber, and coatings. 5-Nitro-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-one reacts with butyronitrile and amide to form polymers. It can also be reacted with acetylene to produce acrylonitrile or diethyl ether.
