Nor-desoxycholic acid is a bile acid that is found in human feces. It is produced by the breakdown of phytanic acid, which is found in the diet and synthesized by the liver. Nor-desoxycholic acid has been shown to have physiological effects on humans, such as an increase in serum bile acids and an inhibition of diarrhoea. This compound also decreases serum cholesterol levels and may be used to treat cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis or pancreatic enzyme deficiency. The metabolism of nor-desoxycholic acid has been studied using kinetic data from liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). This method was able to measure the amount of nor-desoxycholic acid present in human serum samples.
