1-Phenyl-2-thiourea is a fluorescent probe that is used for the detection of intracellular hydrogen. It is synthesized by reacting phenylhydrazine with thiourea in trifluoroacetic acid. 1-Phenyl-2-thiourea has been shown to be an inducer of autophagy and has toxicological properties. The fluorescence intensity of 1-phenyl-2-thiourea decreases when it binds to intracellular hydrogen and the fluorescence intensity increases when it binds to nitrogen atoms. It is also used as a model compound for the study of conformational changes in proteins, specifically fetal bovine serum albumin, which can be studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
