4-Pyridylmercaptoacetyl chloride hydrochloride is a silylating agent that is used as an antimicrobial in the treatment of staphylococcal and streptococcal infections. It is also used for the production of aminocephalosporanic acid, which is an antibiotic. 4-Pyridylmercaptoacetyl chloride hydrochloride can be hydrolyzed to produce 7-aminocephalosporanic acid and pyridine, which may have some antifungal properties. This compound reacts with proteins by replacing the amino group with a reactive sulfonate group in a substitution reaction. The reaction product has been shown to inhibit enzymatic activity and to be effective against many gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
