a-(4-Pyridyl N-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone is a pharmacological agent that is a radical and can be used to induce oxidative injury in cells. It can be used as an antioxidant and has been shown to have protective effects against oxidative injury in rat liver microsomes, K562 cells, and Hl-60 cells. a-(4-Pyridyl N-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone has also been shown to protect against redox cycle reactions that result in the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential. This compound has been shown to be effective as a model system for the study of reactive species and redox potentials.
