Phenyl-pyrrolidin-1-yl-acetic acid is a synthetic reagent that can be used to form aldehydes from aldehydes, or to form formate salts. It has been shown that the reaction of phenyl-pyrrolidin-1-yl-acetic acid with methyl acetoacetate in the presence of potassium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate yields an excellent yield of ethyl 2-(phenylcarbonyl)propanoate. This reagent is also used as a catalyst for reactions such as the synthesis of 4,4'-diphenol from benzaldehyde and propylene oxide. Phenyl-pyrrolidin-1-yl-acetic acid is useful for the synthesis of practical organic compounds because it can be easily purified by distillation.
