5-Phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol is a thione molecule that has been shown to have anticancer and antimicrobial activity. It binds to the reactive site of the enzyme cytochrome c oxidase, which is responsible for the oxidation of reduced cytochrome c and other substrates in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The binding of 5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol prevents this reaction from occurring, inhibiting cellular respiration. 5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol also inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. This binding prevents the formation of an enzyme complex with DNA synthesis that is required for cell division.
