Sulforhodamine 101 is a fluorescent dye that can be used as a marker for uptake of drugs in the body. It has been shown to bind to polysialic acid, a component of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) in neurons and synapses. The binding of Sulforhodamine 101 to NCAM is reversible and blocked by cyclosporine A, suggesting it can be used as a marker for neuropathological changes. In vitro studies have shown that Sulforhodamine 101 binds with fibroblasts and enhances their growth, which may be due to its ability to bind with NCAM.
