Systemin is a peptide hormone that belongs to the family of basic proteins. It is involved in regulating plant growth and development, including aspects of cell division, elongation and differentiation. Systemin has been shown to regulate transcriptional regulation of genes that encode proteins by binding to the promoter region of DNA. Systemin also plays a role in bacterial colonic microflora and protein synthesis. The most well-known function of systemin is its role as an insect defense peptide, where it acts by inhibiting the growth or killing insects such as potato aphids or Colorado potato beetles, as well as other pests such as corn earworm larvae or Japanese beetle larvae. Systemin is found in plants from the Solanaceae family (e.g., potatoes) and many other plant families.
