Semicarbazide is a coumarin derivative that inhibits the growth of bacteria. It is used as an antimicrobial agent, and has been shown to be effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium perfringens. Semicarbazide has been found to have significant cytotoxicity in the presence of NADH and acetate, but not in the presence of glucose or oxygen. The mechanism of its cytotoxicity is thought to be due to its ability to inhibit enzymes such as alcohol dehydrogenase, aminopeptidase, and glutathione reductase. Semicarbazide also inhibits the growth of certain types of cancer cells by inhibiting DNA synthesis and protein synthesis. This substance has been successfully used in animal studies for the treatment of heart disease by reducing blood pressure and increasing coronary flow velocity.
