Scandium(III) chloride is an inorganic compound that is soluble in water. The compound has a molecular weight of 186.2 g/mol and consists of one Scandium atom and three Chloride atoms. Scandium(III) chloride has acidic properties and can act as an acid catalyst. It also can be used to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, which is an intermediate chemical used in bioinorganic chemistry. Scandium(III) chloride reacts with water molecules to produce hydrated metal ion clusters, which are coordination complexes composed of a metal ion surrounded by ligands such as oxygen or nitrogen atoms. X-ray absorption spectroscopy has been used to study the structure of these clusters and observe the stepwise reaction between Scandium(III) chloride and water molecules.
