Description

O-Sulfo-L-serine is a racemase inhibitor that is used to block the formation of the neurotransmitter glutamate. It belongs to the group of enzyme inhibitors and has been shown to be effective in treating nerve injury. O-Sulfo-L-serine blocks the activity of glutamic acid decarboxylase, which catalyzes the conversion of glutamate into GABA in the brain. This inhibition prevents glutamate from being converted into GABA, leading to an increase in extracellular glutamate levels. This increase in extracellular glutamate levels leads to nerve injury as well as impaired synaptic function, mainly through its effects on calcium ion homeostasis.
