Tris(phenylpyrazole)iridium is a metal-organic framework that can be used as a light harvesting material in solar cells. It has been shown to have high quantum efficiency and optical properties. Tris(phenylpyrazole)iridium absorbs light and generates excitons, which are pairs of electrons and holes that can be separated by an electric field. The separation of these particles leads to the generation of electrical current in a device called a photovoltaic cell. When the exciton reaches the interface between two different semiconductor materials, it is converted into an electron-hole pair. This process is called charge transfer, which has been shown to occur with great efficiency in tris(phenylpyrazole)iridium crystals.
