Tris(trifluoro-2,4-pentanedionato)iron(III) is a chloroform soluble compound that has been shown to be useful in the oxidation of styrene and other organic substrates. It reacts with peroxide to form hydrogen peroxide and trifluoroacetone, which is then oxidized by benzoyl peroxide. Tris(trifluoro-2,4-pentanedionato)iron(III) can also be used as an initiator for polymerization reactions, such as the synthesis of methyl methacrylate. This ligand is sensitive to changes in temperature and pH.
