Substance P is a neuropeptide that is present in the brain and the intestines. It is released from nerve cells in response to pain, inflammation, or immune reactions. This peptide causes vasodilation and increases intestinal motility by activating the release of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide. Substance P can be cleaved into three fragments: [Tyr8] substance P, [Tyr5] substance P, and [Tyr3] substance P. These fragments have different effects on calcium ion concentrations, with [Tyr8] substance P being most effective at increasing calcium concentration in cell culture systems. The optimum pH for this peptide is 4-5.
