Undecylenic acid is a monounsaturated fatty acid that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It reacts with the hydroxyl group on the bacteria cell wall, leading to membrane damage and leakage of cellular contents. Undecylenic acid has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against a number of bacterial species, including Candida glabrata. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used for the treatment of infectious diseases. A structural analysis of undecylenic acid revealed that it does not inhibit mitochondrial function in human cells at concentrations up to 10 micromolar. The secondary structure was found to be mainly beta-pleated sheet with some alpha-helical content.
