Product Information
3,4-o-Isopropylidene shikimic acid (3,4-OI) is a naturally occurring compound that is synthesized from shikimic acid. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties and inhibit colon tissue damage in experimental colitis. 3,4-OI also inhibits active oxygen and active oxygen species generation, which are responsible for the production of reactive oxygen species such as peroxides and superoxide anion radicals. 3,4-OI binds to fatty acids in the colon tissues and prevents the formation of malondialdehyde and other toxic products. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit matrix metalloproteinase activity in colon tissues. 3,4-OI has no effect on necrosis factor activity but does inhibit the inflammatory response by inhibiting cytokine release and IL-1β production in macrophages.
