Creatine kinase (CK) is a ubiquitous enzyme that is found in many tissues and cells. It is responsible for the transfer of high-energy phosphate groups from ATP to ADP, which can result in the conversion of ADP to AMP. Creatine kinase can be used as a biomarker for renal injury. CK has been shown to have a diuretic effect by increasing the excretion of sodium chloride and potassium chloride, which may be due to its ability to decrease blood pressure and increase atp concentrations. Creatine kinase also has a role in cell membranes, specifically in the transport of cholesterol across cell membranes. The subgroup analyses on CK levels showed that those with low levels were more likely to develop coronary artery disease (CAD).
