2-Amino-5-(o-tolyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole is a potent antibacterial and antifungal agent. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by interfering with the synthesis of proteins essential for bacterial cell division and by binding to the ribosomal RNA. 2-Amino-5-(o-tolyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole also has neurotoxic effects. It binds to neuronal membranes in vitro and can cause seizures and death in mice. 2-Amino-5-(o-tolyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole has significant antimicrobial activity against Gram positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538).
