Rhodium(III) nitrate, solution in water is a chemical compound that has been used as a catalyst and oxidation catalyst. Rhodium metal particles are deposited on the surface of zirconium oxide and then mixed with hydrochloric acid to form rhodium chloride. This process can be repeated many times to create several layers of rhodium metal on the surface of the zirconium oxide particle. The reaction mechanism is not well understood but it is known that the rhodium particles react with hydrogen chloride, water vapor, and oxygen to produce hydrogen gas, water vapor, and rhodium oxide. Rhodium oxide can also be synthesized by reacting rhodium metal with an oxidizing agent such as potassium dichromate or sodium hypochlorite.
