∆9,11-Dehydro-17α-cyanomethyl estradiol is a metabolite of chlormadinone and cyproterone acetate, which are drugs that are used in the treatment of prostate cancer. It is formed by the elimination of one hydrogen atom from the 17α position and hydroxylation of the 2α and 16β positions. The synthesis of ∆9,11-Dehydro-17α-cyanomethyl estradiol has been shown to be dependent on cytochrome P450 enzymes. This metabolite has estrogenic properties that may contribute to its activation. ∆9,11-Dehydro-17α-cyanomethyl estradiol is found in wastewater effluent as a result of drug metabolism.
