Mellein is a natural phenolic compound that is found in the leaves, bark, and roots of plants. The structure of mellein can be found in p-hydroxybenzoic acid. Mellein has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against human cancer cells. Mellein is also used as an analytical reagent for the detection of p-nitrophenyl phosphate. The reaction mechanism of mellein has not been fully elucidated but it is thought to involve a nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon adjacent to the hydroxyl group. Mellein is found naturally in plants and is produced by plant metabolism from protocatechuic acid, which may be why symptoms of ingestion include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
