Varenicline is a glycosylation product with a sugar, which is synthesized by the methylation and fluorination of carbamoyl b-D-glucuronide. This drug is used for the treatment of nicotine dependence in adults. It acts on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms from smoking, as well as increasing the release of dopamine. Varenicline binds to alpha4beta2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which are located in the brain and other organs, such as the stomach and pancreas. The drug has been shown to be effective for smoking cessation when used alone or in combination with nicotine replacement therapy.
