Gadolinium carbonate hydrate is a gadolinium-containing compound. The compound is a crystalline powder, which reacts with water to form a solution that is supercritical. Gadolinium carbonate hydrate has been used as an enhancement agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and as a binding agent for gadolinium ions. In addition, it has been used as a magnetic material in microscopy and as a catalyst for reactions involving acid catalysts. Gadolinium carbonate hydrate can be synthesized by reacting gadolinium oxide with carbon dioxide gas in the presence of water or alcohols, or by heating gadolinium nitrate with sodium bicarbonate and carbon dioxide gas.
