It has been shown to have high antiviral activity against HIV, herpes simplex virus type 1, and herpes simplex virus type 2. 5,6-Dinitro-1-(b-D-ribofuranosyl)benzamidazole is a phosphoramidate prodrug of the natural compound 6-nitrobenzoxazole. This drug is activated by deoxyribonucleosides in vivo to form the monophosphate which inhibits viral DNA synthesis. The phosphoramidate prodrug form of 5,6-dinitrobenzoxazole has been shown to be more potent than the parent compound in inhibiting replication of HIV and herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2.
