5-Ethynyl-1-(b-D-ribofuranosyl)-imidazo-4-carbonitrile is a novel, modified ribonucleoside monophosphate that has antiviral, anticancer, and antiretroviral properties. It was originally synthesized as an activator of the DNA polymerase and is capable of stimulating the synthesis of RNA from DNA templates. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. 5-Ethynyl-1-(b-D-ribofuranosyl)-imidazo-4-carbonitrile is also a phosphoramidite nucleotide analog that can be incorporated into DNA during DNA synthesis.
