H-Ala-Arg-Val-Tyr-Ile-His-Pro-Phe (ARVIP) is a peptide with structural similarities to angiotensin II. The sequence of ARVIP is derived from the C terminus of angiotensinogen, which is cleaved by renin to form angiotensin I. ARVIP has been shown to produce vasoconstriction in experimental models of hypertension. In addition, ARVIP has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the activity of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), which converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II. This inhibition leads to decreased production of vasoconstrictive substances and increased blood flow.
ARVIP also increases blood pressure through its ability to activate alpha 1 adrenergic receptors and stimulate release of norepinephrine from sympathetic nerve endings in the brain stem. It may also lead to an increase in coronary blood flow by
