Thiophene-2-carboxylic acid is a heterocyclic compound containing a thiophene ring and carboxylic acid functional groups. Thiophene-2-carboxylic acid is used in the synthesis of β-unsaturated ketones, butyronitrile, acetonitrile, aldehydes, and amines. It also has shown to be an inhibitor of kidney disease, neuropathic pain, and xylene toxicity. The compound is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of polycystic kidney disease drugs. Thiophene-2-carboxylic acid also has anti-cancer properties that are due to its ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by inhibiting protein synthesis and inducing apoptosis.
